How to delete your ChatGPT (OpenAI) account

Export your data first (Settings → Data controls → Export data); OpenAI emails a download link with your full conversation history.
Turn off model-training in Data controls and delete individual chats you'd rather not leave sitting in the export.
Cancel ChatGPT Plus or any paid plan, and check whether it bills through Apple or Google rather than OpenAI directly.
Revoke API keys and cancel API billing separately if you ever used the developer platform — that's a different surface from the chat app.
Go to Settings → Data controls → Delete account, type your email and the confirmation word, then confirm.
This one does not come back
Permanent — the email address cannot be used to sign up again. Export everything you might want before you confirm, because support cannot restore the account afterwards even if you ask the same day.
What trips people up with ChatGPT (OpenAI)
